This was taken during a break on the last
snowmobiling trip. I am actually sitting on the ocean about a couple of miles out of
town heading towards the open water (where the ocean begins to break up). It was
something to be standing 30 feet from the edge of the ice watching the icebergs float by.

Me in waders during a salmon count at Pilgrim
River. What fun!
Pilgrim River is about70 miles north of Nome. There are a number of these
counting stations called camps that are staffed with three people for a
period of about 3 months. They stay there and supplies are brought
into them. The information that they gather on how many salmon are present
determines whether there is fishing allowed by the Fish and Game
Department.

Scott Dunavin, one of the counters, walking on a weir (fish
fence). Note the gorgeous scenery in the background. Scott, his wife
Cori, and another man named Arlie were the three counters at this camp. Scott used to be the athletic
director at Home High School.
