English 101 Composition I
This course offers instruction and guided practice in the skills,
research, and documentation needed for effective academic writing. The
text for the course is
Axelrod & Cooper’s Concise Guide to Writing, 3rd Ed.
NY: Bedford/St. Martins, 2002.
Writing assignments include personal anecdote, explanatory essay, article summary, annotated
research articles, explanatory essay, evaluative essay, and researched
position paper.
Learning objectives for the course include:

Students will write effectively and responsibly and will
understand and interpret the written expression of
others.
- Students will recognize when information is
needed and have the ability to locate, organize,
critically evaluate, and effectively use information
from a variety of sources with intellectual integrity. .
Students will support their researched texts with
quotations, paraphrases, and summaries accurately, using
appropriate citation practices.

Students will use the processes, forms, and styles of
writing appropriate to academic communication and
composition.

Students will complete assignments using appropriate
computer technologies, including word processing,
electronic presentation software, web browsing,
electronic mail, and online an electronic discussion
board. Bibliographic software is optional.
