English 208: Documentation & Presentation


This course covers the principles of clear description and documentation of computer programs and systems, and methods of preparing oral presentations.

Assignments

The course is designed to teach students how to write materials for the computer industry and how to present ideas orally. Course work culminates in one major written project--a software manual--and one major oral presentation. Supporting assignments include

  • collaborative tutorial

  • tasks lists and analyses

  • audience analysis & document specifications

  • project proposal

  • professional memos

Learning objectives

1. Understand the importance of good grammar and mechanics when writing computer instructions.
2. Understand the critical importance and elements of an audience analysis before beginning a writing project.
3. Write a clear set of instructions for a chosen software program, aimed at a specific audience.
4. Create a document prototype and final copy of a software manual using FrameMaker.
5. Analyze the strengths and weaknesses of a professionally prepared computer hardware or software manual.
