Clause: A group of words that has its own subject and verb.
There are two types:
1.
Dependent: Does not yet express a complete thought.
example: Because you wrote me a letter
2.
Independent: Expresses a complete thought.
example: Jim wrote me a letter.
Sentence: A group of words that has its own subject and verb
that expresses a complete thought
NOTE:
Sentences may be as short as one independent clause, or may use any number and
combination of
clauses, so long as an independent clause is included (independent
clauses
are in red).
example: * Jim wrote me a letter.
* Jim wrote me a very long letter that explained
why he had gone to Nigeria
with his goldfish until
he had run out of money.
* Because he was unhappy, Bill went to visit Hank.
