Prepositions begin prepositional phrases, which merely add extra information to sentences.  Prepositions are easy to spot once you memorize this little "test sentence":

The squirrel was/ran ___ the tree(s).

Think of how many words would fit in that blank:  from, in, down, up, behind, beneath, below, beside, between, into, through

There are many prepositions!

Prepositional Phrases:  Once you are able to find prepositions, prepositional phrases are easy.

            1.  Prepositions always start prepositional phrases, except in non-standard English.

            2.  Prepositional phrases start with a preposition and end at a noun.

                        example:   in the house
                                        at work
beside the old, white, run-down farmhouse
                                        between the parked cars
